Portia Cobb

G - Green Tech Station Artist

Portia Cobb is an interdisciplinary artist deeply interested in telling stories that reflect the double-consciousness of African American history, identity, memory & forced forgetting. Her body of work and research have joined these themes to short-form videos, photographic essays, field recordings, ephemeral installation and performance. Cobb refers to herself as a disciple of Sarah Maldoror and names her practice as actions of uncover, collect, contextualize, and re-imagine. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Peck School of The Arts: Department of Film, Video, Animation & New Genres. Her teaching focuses on ‘The Documentary’: narratives exploring internal concepts of identity, memory, history, and place. As a principal researcher at UWM, Cobb leads the creative team for the UWM Voices of Gun Violence Archive.

She supported a WaterMarks poetry workshop at the Century City Tower related to Green Tech Station.
