Winter 2025

January 2nd, 2025

As we begin a new year here in Milwaukee, those of us at WaterMarks are focused on creating artworks and conversations around environmental issues regarding water. In this newsletter you will learn about some upcoming partner events that will keep you warm and some community resources.

Partner Events

WaterMarks isn't building an atlas of water alone. We work with countless organizations and individuals on this endeavor. WaterMarks Community-University Working Group is a collective of residents, artists, community-based institutions, and researchers who assemble to guide the future of water in Milwaukee.

Here are some upcoming events that our partners are hosting:

Gross Out Day

Get ready for the wonderfully weird world of Gross Out Day at Discovery World! From gooey to crawly, this event is packed with hands-on activities and demonstrations that uncover the science behind all things icky, sticky, gooey, and wiggly.

Location: Discovery World, 500 N Harbor Dr, Milwaukee, WI 53202

Date/time: Sunday, January 12, 2025 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Walking Indigenous Milwaukee

The Indigenous Milwaukee tour creates greater visibility for Indigenous peoples, lands and contributions. It was created by Marquette University's Indigeneity Lab as an opportunity to connect as a community and to create a bridge between residents and visitors and Milwaukee’s rich history. During the program everyone will hear about its creation as well as other projects underway in the Lab.

Organized by Great Waters Group, a group under the Sierra Club Wisconsin Chapter

Location: Marquette University in the Alumni Memorial Union room 157 or Maamawi Abiwin 1442 W Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53233, USA

Date/time: Wednesday, January 22, 2025 / 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Snowflake Spectacular

A one-night-only, ticketed event at Discovery World! Join us as we transform the museum into a winter wonderland to celebrate the science of the season and the Year of the Snake for the Lunar New Year. This unforgettable evening offers something for all ages. Endlessly explore science, art, and culture in one magical evening experience.

Location: Discovery World, 500 N Harbor Dr, Milwaukee, WI 53202

Date/time: Friday, January 31, 2025 / 5:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Support Local Entrepreneurs

As the winter holidays wind down, consider supporting local artists and entrepreneurs!

Here are some upcoming markets that you should check out:

Milwaukee Winter Farmers Market

Fondy's Milwaukee Winter Farmers Market exists to support local producers and to help our community eat local longer. Agricultural vendors offer high quality fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, poultry and dairy products. SNAP benefits are accepted at the market. Local food vendors also bring a wide variety of freshly baked goods, jams, cider, honey, maple syrup, sauces and soups, as well as delicious global cuisine. The market also offers health and wellness, and body products, such as soaps, body creams, and more.

Location: The Table, 5305 W. Capitol Drive, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 53216

Date/Time: Saturdays, January 4th, 2025 - April 19, 2025 / 9:00AM to 2:00PM

Community Resources

An integral part of the environmental conversation is how we plan to protect and support the vulnerable members of our communities. With the Wisconsin winter in full swing, we are thinking about everyone struggling through the cold and the people that are working tirelessly to help.

Call this number and the operators will provide you with information on a wide variety of non-emergency family, financial, health and social service issues.

Community services for those facing houselessness

Consider donating items as well as your time, to help support integral organizations. After the New Year, many organizations have noticed a decrease in financial support, but we are moving into the coldest part of the year when these programs need the most support.

Please take some time to research what resources may be available in your neighborhood and the surrounding areas.
